Overview

Every second counts—during transport, in OR scheduling, and for recipients on the waiting list. In transplantation medicine, time determines organ quality, therapeutic options, and ultimately, life.

TimeSeal® is a smart, portable, and easy-to-use transport system that moves organs safely and consistently. Intelligent sensor technology supports organ functionality and viability—with optimal temperature stability.

The Challenge

Organ transport is a high-risk scenario: extreme time pressure, changing teams, and handovers between hospital, transport, and operating room—often under less-than-ideal conditions. At the same time, expectations for traceability and process reliability are rising: the condition of the organ must remain stable throughout the journey and be documented in a clear, understandable way. Up to 80% of transplantable organs remain unused—making time and logistics the critical bottleneck.

A core requirement for TimeSeal® was therefore flexibility with maximum reliability: the system had to be easy to handle, stable when carried, and dependable in every movement—lifting, carrying, repositioning, loading.

Beyond portability, TimeSeal® also had to perform as a true trolley: quick to grab, intuitive to pull, push, and maneuver, safe during direction changes, and stable across different surfaces. This turns complex medtech into a transport solution that feels immediately familiar in clinical routines—precisely when every second counts.

The Design

Eckstein Design translated technical complexity into a clinically ready Medical Device Design that makes safety tangible and reduces operational effort. At its core were usability engineering and human factors—a clear, clinical form language designed for secure handling under time pressure.
The wrap-around handle gives TimeSeal® an intuitive “protective logic.” It creates safe grip points, stabilizes handovers, and communicates control—visually and through touch. This is complemented by the trolley function with an extendable handle and large wheels, making the system immediately understandable in everyday use and reliable even in dynamic situations. The calm, rounded geometry integrates the inner compartment stress-free and supports fast orientation. Medical white with subtle blue accents reinforces hygiene, precision, and professionalism—especially in moments where trust matters. The integrated sensor system is intentionally “smart, not complicated”: information is available without overloading the workflow.

The Result

TimeSeal® combines industrial design for medical technology, high usability, and technological innovation into a system designed to remove time as a risk factor from the process. X-Therma positions the solution as an enabler for multi-day sub-zero preservation—aiming for 3–7 days instead of today’s typical 4–24 hours—significantly improving transport, planning, and matching. TimeSeal® provides a stable sub-zero environment and pairs that stability with integrated sensor technology that transmits real-time logistics data to the receiving team.
Crucially for clinical value, the system is intended to work without supporting infrastructure such as blood, oxygen, or an external power supply—making it simpler, more robust, and faster to deploy.

The outcome is a reliable, controlled, easy-to-understand product that opens new logistical possibilities, reduces geographic limitations, and improves transplant planning—with the potential to streamline treatment pathways and reduce healthcare costs. Eckstein Design helped shape the product experience so that high-tech biopreservation becomes straightforward in daily clinical use: robust in transport, clear in handling, and confidence-building when every second counts.
