Industrial Design and UI/UX for the Highest Standards in Medical Technology.

Overview

The Sim.LED 8000 represents the next step in the development of professional lighting for the healthcare sector. As a high-quality medical technology product, it meets the complex requirements of modern operating rooms in terms of light quality, ergonomics, and hygiene. In collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, Eckstein Design developed both the surgical light and the associated user interface of the control unit. The goal was to combine maximum technical precision, intuitive usability, and a brand-compliant appearance into an iconic product design.

The Challenge

The central challenge was to consistently translate functional requirements into a visually clear and brand-compliant design language. The focus lay on further developing the brand’s characteristic three-sided housing design, which conveys a distinctive formal identity while at the same time creating a symmetrical, ergonomic, and well-balanced appearance. Modular thinking ensured that multiple light modules could be seamlessly combined without affecting the light field.

Design details further enhance user orientation: color-coded handles provide clear guidance in the OR, while translucent foil prints visually recede technical components without compromising light quality. Guided by the principles of Human-Centered Design, the result is a design that unites brand identity, user orientation, and the specific demands of medical technology at the highest design level.

More projects

The control unit of the Sim.LED 8000 is mounted as a touch display directly on the gimbal and was completely redeveloped as part of the project. The goal was to create an interface that makes complex settings accessible in a clear and intuitive way. A structured layout and visual reduction ensure that no cognitive overload occurs. The tab system highlights the central functions and enables quick switching between the most important settings.

The interface was deliberately designed for typical operating room scenarios: surgeons and medical staff can switch between functions immediately without navigating through nested menu structures. The result is an interface that not only appears visually reduced but is also functionally aligned with the time-critical demands of surgical workflows – a tool that supports rather than distracts. This project demonstrates how UI/UX design for technical applications can deliver real value in highly sensitive environments.

From the surgical lamp to the user interface, Eckstein Design creates medical devices that perform reliably and convincingly in sensitive environments.

The Design

The design of the Sim.LED 8000 combines formal precision with functional purpose. The distinctive three-sided geometry of the lamp body translates Simeon’s corporate identity into a striking, recognizable form that is ergonomically refined, well-balanced, and modular in use. Materiality, color concept, and surface division follow the principle of reduction, orientation, and clarity. Technical components are visually minimized without compromising usability or light quality.

The physical product is complemented by a carefully designed user interface, resulting in a holistic concept that balances technology, aesthetics, and user needs. The Sim.LED 8000 demonstrates how industrial design for medical technology can unite human-centered design, brand identity, and technical excellence in a coherent product.
